Tonight's Start Up Downtown Will Connect Job-Seekers with Local Start Up Companies

18, July 2013

Start Up Downtown will be held tonight from 6-9 p.m. on the second-floor balcony of the Union Street Station (201 SE 2nd Ave). The event will showcase companies such as Mobiquity, Trendy Entertainment, Sporting Odyssey, Partender, Grooveshark, and Fracture.

Startup companies within Downtown Gainesville and Innovation Square are trying to get the word out that they have opportunities for students and job seekers with technical skills by holding tonight's event.

The necessity for the event arose when local companies realized that information technology workers in the city weren't aware of the many jobs that are available to them.

The following is an excerpt from the Gainesville Sun:

Cadets from the first class of HackerHouse also will demonstrate their prototypes. HackerHouse was created by Trendy Entertainment and ToneRite founder Augi Lye and features eight engineering students who live together for three months to invent new technologies and receive mentoring from local entrepreneurs.

The idea for Start Up Downtown came from one of the monthly task force meetings of GIT, or Gainesville Information Technology. The group was created by FloridaWorks and the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce to help employers hire IT workers.

Tesch-Vaught said they are trying to connect IT training and education to the skills employers need and raise awareness about jobs so people with skills don’t leave town to find work.

Attendance is free of charge. More than 70 people registered by Tuesday afternoon through FWStartUpDowntown.eventbrite.com. Parking in the Southeast Second Avenue garage will be validated. Interested job seekers also may register at EmployFlorida.com
